Conference given during The Space photometry Revolution, CoRoT Symposium 3, Kepler KASC-7 joint meeting (6-11 Jul 2014, Toulouse, France) http://corot3-kasc7.sciencesconf.org/ Session: 2 - Extrasolar planets and planet systems Date: July 7, 2014 Title: The Relevance of Optical Data for Understanding Exoplanetary Atmospheres Speaker: Kevin Heng Abstract: The CoRoT and Kepler missions have taught us valuable lessons on what we may learn about exoplanetary atmospheres in the optical range of wavelengths. A major theme in the exoplanetary atmospheres community is the study of clouds, which renders interpretation of their thermal structures and chemical abundances, via infrared data, degenerate. Several HST Large Programs (Bean, Desert, Sing) have demonstrated the ubiquity of clouds in highly-irradiated exoplanetary atmospheres. Optical data provides a unique opportunity to break some of these degeneracies. In this review, I will highlight current and past optical studies of exoplanets, focusing on measurements of geometric albedos and phase curves. I will emphasize how the information from optical data compliments infrared data when performing atmospheric retrieval (inverse modeling of their atmospheres). Finally, I will describe how future data from the CHEOPS and TESS missions will advance the state of the art in understanding exoplanetary atmospheres. I've been working with a friend of mine who has a strong background in military night optics. He is also a novice photographer among many other things and is getting me set up with portable infrared flood lights that can be deployed around a given address before I execute the repo so that when I approach the address the footage caught on the cameras will look like its late dust instead of pitch blackness as in this video. I will also have one that I wear and a couple mounted on the Repo Ninja. Should be showing them in use very soon. Again I apologize for all the black in this video but remember this is what I saw the whole time and it's what we get to work in all the time.

A Racknload review/overview of the Yukon Photon XT night vision rifle scope The Yukon Photon XT Digital Night Vision Rifle Scope is a new hybrid technology, unique to Yukon Advanced Optics. A technologically advance digital night vision module is fused with a traditional riflescope body, to produce a night vision scope that has characteristics similar to a daylight scope, yet has the capability of use in total darkness. A hard anodised, 30mm aluminium alloy body tube enables easy mounting to a variety of rifles, and is both durable and highly water and shock resistant. A large aperture eyepiece with easy diopter adjustment, provides comfortable viewing with a generous eye relief. The eyepiece is furnished with a soft rubber eyepiece for the prevention of light spill that would otherwise scare off game. The image is formed with an infra-red biased CMOS digital sensor. This sensor amplifies low ambient light, making the Yukon Photon XT less dependent on IR light than many other budget night vision systems. An inbuilt infra-red LED illuminator with three brightness settings produces a very clean image when used in extreme darkness. There is also provision for attaching an additional infra-red flash light, such as a Pulsar LED or Laser infra-red flash light, for extending the range of the Yukon Photon XT. The reticle is produced electronically, and there is a choice of 6 designs, which can be easily selected on-the-fly, without loss of zero. The colour of the reticle can be be selected to display as red, green, or white, depending on the prevailing conditions. Zeroing of the reticle is performed via the main menu. The Yukon Photon XT is a reticle moving system, which ensures that full image quality and field-of-view is maintained at all times. The Yukon Photon XT produces a very good image, with excellent contrast and resolution. The image brightness has 15 levels of adjustment, and a video-out socket enables recording via a Newton CVR640, Yukon MPR, or for display on a screen for viewing in real-time. This sight cannot be damaged by high light exposure, and can be used during the daytime if required. The Yukon Photon XT is suitable for all calibres up to a muzzle energy of 6000 joules (4425 ft./lbs), and heralds a new era in high quality, affordable night vision sighting systems. The Yukon Photon is supplied with a lens cloth, carrying case, and is supplied with a carry case, instruction and care manual, and a 3 year manufacturer's warranty, only available from an authorised Yukon Optics dealer. 4.6x Magnification 42mm objective lens CMOS sensor Camera resolution 656x492 pixels System resolution 38 lp/pmm Detection range 150 metres* Field of View 4.3 degrees(7.5 metres @ 100 metres) 60 mm eye relief In-built 810nm IR LED illuminator 3V (2xAA batteries) internal power provides up to 5 hours continuous use with Li-ion batteries Waterproof IPx4 (IEC 60529) 30mm tube Operational temperature range -15C to +50C Mil-STD-1913 Weaver accessory rail Dimensions 398x75x80mm Weight- 620 grams Large calibre resistant up to 6000 Joules (4425 ft/lbs) example, .375 H&H; Magnum. Active mode-locking of mid-infrared quantum cascade lasers with short gain recovery time. Yongrui Wang and Alexey Belyanin (2015), Optics Express http://dx.doi.org/10.1364/OE.23.004173 We investigate the dynamics of actively modulated mid-infrared quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) using space- and time-domain simulations of coupled density matrix and Maxwell equations with resonant tunneling current taken into account. We show that it is possible to achieve active mode locking and stable generation of picosecond pulses in high performance QCLs with a vertical laser transition and a short gain recovery time by bias modulation of a short section of a monolithic Fabry-Perot cavity. In fact, active mode locking in QCLs with a short gain recovery time turns out to be more robust to the variation of parameters as compared to previously studied lasers with a long gain recovery time. We investigate the effects of spatial hole burning and phase locking on the laser output.
Visible and invisible mirages: comparing inferior mirages in the visible and thermal infrared. Michael Vollmer et al (2015), Applied Optics http://dx.doi.org/10.1364/AO.54.000B76 Visible (VIS)-light and thermal infrared (IR) inferior mirages in the 8–14 μm waveband have been observed simultaneously for the takeoff and landing of various airplanes at distances of several kilometers. Similarities as well as differences between the VIS and IR mirages are discussed.
Atypical prefrontal cortical responses to joint/non-joint attention in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD): A functional near-infrared spectroscopy study. Huilin Zhu et al (2015), Biomedical Optics Express http://dx.doi.org/10.1364/BOE.6.000690 Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neuro-developmental disorder, characterized by impairments in one’s capacity for joint attention. In this study, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was applied to study the differences in activation and functional connectivity in the prefrontal cortex between children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and typically developing (TD) children. 21 ASD and 20 TD children were recruited to perform joint and non-joint attention tasks. Compared with TD children, children with ASD showed reduced activation and atypical functional connectivity pattern in the prefrontal cortex during joint attention. The atypical development of left prefrontal cortex might play an important role in social cognition defects of children with ASD.

noodls 2015-04-02Optics is the branch of physics which involves the behavior and properties of light, including its interactions with matter and the construction of instruments that use or detect it. Optics usually describes the behavior of visible, ultraviolet, and infrared light. Because light is an electromagnetic wave, other forms of electromagnetic radiation such as X-rays, microwaves, and radio waves exhibit similar properties.
Most optical phenomena can be accounted for using the classical electromagnetic description of light. Complete electromagnetic descriptions of light are, however, often difficult to apply in practice. Practical optics is usually done using simplified models. The most common of these, geometric optics, treats light as a collection of rays that travel in straight lines and bend when they pass through or reflect from surfaces. Physical optics is a more comprehensive model of light, which includes wave effects such as diffraction and interference that cannot be accounted for in geometric optics. Historically, the ray-based model of light was developed first, followed by the wave model of light. Progress in electromagnetic theory in the 19th century led to the discovery that light waves were in fact electromagnetic radiation.
